\'Texas Chainsaw 3-D\' slaughtered the competition this weekend, debuting in the top spot at the box office.

The horror film, from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., took in $23 million in its opening weekend in theaters in North America, placing it ahead of holdovers including \'Django Unchained\' and \'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.\' While the film includes no major actors, younger audiences were drawn to the presence of singer Trey Songz, with one out of three moviegoers under the age of 25 saying his starring role was a primary reason for attending the film, according to the studio.

In its second week in theaters, \'Django Unchained\' took the number two spot at the box office, earning $20.1 million. The Quentin Tarantino-directed film, distributed by Weinstein Co., has earned $106.4 million in cumulative domestic grosses, putting it in line to become Mr. Tarantino\'s highest grossing film (his highest to date is \'Inglourious Basterds\' with $120.8 million).

\'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey\' had its trip to the number one spot cut short, falling to third place in its fourth week in theaters. The film earned $17.5 million, bringing its cumulative domestic grosses to $263.8 million.

It was followed closely by \'Les Miserables,\' which took in $16.1 million to bring its cumulative domestic grosses to $103.6 million. The film, from Comcast Corp.\'s Universal Pictures, stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.

Coming in fifth place was \'Parental Guidance,\' the family comedy from News Corp .\'s Twentieth Century Fox. In its second week in theaters, the movie, starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler, earned $10.1 million. News Corp. owns both Fox and The Wall Street Journal.

Other holdovers populated most of the rest of the top 10. \'Jack Reacher,\' from Viacom Inc.\'s VIAB +1.88% Paramount Pictures, and starring Tom Cruise, earned $9.3 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $64.8 million. The Judd Apatow-directed comedy \'This is 40\' from Universal, took in $8.6 million.

After nine weeks in theaters, \'Lincoln,\' directed by Steven Spielberg, has taken in $144 million, including $5.3 million over the weekend. \'The Guilt Trip,\' starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, came in ninth, with $4.3 million. And in its second week in theaters, \'Promised Land,\' a drama directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matt Damon, earned $4.3 million.
